Morning torch march with candle lights and a commemorative prayer greeted Ninoy’s death anniversary by the militants at the Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque

Members of the Partido Lakas ng Masa greeted Ninoy’s Death Anniversary with an early march with torch and candle lights and a commemorative prayer at the Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque.

As early as 4am, various sectors belonging to sectoral organizations like BMP (Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino), KPML (Kongreso ng Pagkakaisa ng Maralitang Lungsod), Metro Manila Vendors Alliance (MMVA), ZOTO (Zone One Tondo Organization) and the multisectoral coalition SANLAKAS massed up in front of the Fourth Estate Subdivision, a few blocks near the Manila Memorial Park.

The group proceeded to the Manila Memorial Park Gate at around 4:30 am. A negotiation with the guards ensued and the marchers were told that the official time that the gate will be open to the public would be at 5:00am. While waiting for the time of entry, the group launched a short program where three representatives from the different organizations addressed the crowd.

At exactly 5am, the marchers were already allowed entry and the group again peacefully marched with simultaneous singing of a popular nationalist song, “Bayan Ko”. It took the marchers 20 minutes to reach the tomb of Ninoy and Tita Cory. This time around the group pursued their prepared morning prayer officiated by Fr. Eladio Oliver of the Parish of our Lady of the Abandoned in Mandaluyong.

The highlight of the commemorative prayer was the offering of the sectors of the symbols during the offertory part. Workers, peasants, urban poor, fisherfolks and the students took turns in offering their respective symbols depicting their own plight and sectoral struggles.

In an interview during the activity, Atty. Luke Espiritu, Spokesperson of the Partido Lakas ng Masa, pointed out that, “We are doing this worthy activity not for anything else but for the Filipinos to reflect the essence of what Ninoy and Cory did for the Country. Their crusade is yet to be fully realized. The fight for genuine democracy must be pursued. Real democracy means uplifting the lives of the marginalized by effecting basic democratic rights, social services and empowerment.”

“The fulfillment of the real democracy of the masses is the struggle to pursue the unfinished business of the legacy that Ninoy and Cory bestowed upon us.” Espiritu further elaborated.
