Scrap the Sin Tax Bill - BMP-NCRR

PRESS RELEASE
NOVEMBER 14, 2012

Workers and urban poor troops to Senate again to condemn the Senator for their failure to listen to the people’s call to scrap the Sin Tax Bill

Workers and urban poor members from the militant Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino - National Capital Region Rizal (BMP-NCRR) trooped again to the Senate to declare their dismay and anger at the failure of the Senators to heed the call to scrap Malacañang’s scheme to impose heavier taxes on liquor and cigarettes.

The rallyists paraded three (3) red coffins to symbolize the grief and anger felt by the workers, farmers and urban poor to the Senate’s deafness and blindness to the people’s call to scrap the Sin Tax Bill. “We spent several days to rally every time the Senate has a session to bring to the Senators the voice of the poor citizens, our objection to imposing an anti-poor law. We are here rain or shine but not a single Senator have the courage to face or hear our demands,” said Anthony Barnedo, Secretary General ng Kongreso ng Pagkakaisa ng Maralitang Lungsod (KPML-NCRR).

The BMP-NCRR, one of the convenor of the Peoples Coalition Against Regressive Taxation (PCART), began their campaign in front of the Senate when the deliberation for the Sin Tax Bill started. Gie Relova, general secretary of the said militant group, said, “It is now clear for us how numb the Senators are at the workers’ grievances. It is now clear for us that no Senator will stand for the interest of the people for their livelihood and rights. It is now clear for us that this august hall of Congress is a graveyard and mausoleum of the aspiration and hope of the poor.”

“There is a very long list of anti-workers and anti-poor laws that was passed at the halls of the Senate, from the ratification of the GATT WTO, Visiting Forces Agreement, JPEPA, and we will not be surprised that this anti-poor Sin Tax Bill will also be passed,” said the leader-worker.

At the end of the program, the militants burned the three red coffins as symbol of the burning down of the people’s illusion on the Senate as an institution and their declaration of their continuous and intense struggle for the days to come.
